Financial Investment Team Scholarship Awards

2020-21 Student Recipients

Jesse McDonald

The School of Business at Portland State University
Major/Program:  Accounting/Finance
Career Goal:  Accountant

I was enlisted in the United States Marine Corps from 2012-2016 and have been a full time student since September 2016. It has been a grueling journey since 2016; I’ve worked full-time and have been a full-time student every term since then, including summers, in order to provide support to my two children who I am the sole caregiver for. I’m currently an audit intern at Moss Adams and when I graduate, I intend to work there as a public accountant and pursue my CPA license. Regardless of my difficult financial and life
circumstances, I have managed to stay in school and maintain a strong GPA.  I chose a business degree because I wanted to be an accountant, knowing it was a dependable and stable career for me and my little ones.

Daniel Kim

The School of Business at Portland State University
Major/Program:  Finance/Economics
Career Goal:  Real Estate Development

I come from a non-traditional, diverse background. I'm the youngest in my family but the first to serve in the military. I joined the US Army in 2015 and served for four years. As the son of immigrant parents, I went through a harsh and unique journey of immigration and I thank God for the miracle of bringing together DACA and the MAVNI program that allows non-citizens to enlist in the military service. The leadership qualities and skills from the Army have well transitioned into civilian life. Currently, I hold multiple leadership positions in different student organizations such as ATMOS, Multicultural Business Student Association, and Blockchain at Portland State. I am pioneering the field of blockchain technology with PSU students by creating Blockchain at Portland State.

My interest is in real estate development which started with a passion for constructing more sustainable buildings. This fascinating idea was introduced to me in high school. The real estate development process is very complex, involving multiple parties with different expertise working together to achieve one goal. This unique characteristic of real estate development is most appealing. I wish to get exposures to the real estate market to truly wrap myself around the real estate development processes. I want to use my expertise to bring social and environmental justice by developing new infrastructures for the community. I will continue to strive for excellence and inspire next-generation business leaders at the same time.

Volunteer Activities

Junior Achievement of Oregon

We participated as a speaker in a 6-week program as part of the Junior Skills class to educate students on financial topics.

Portland State University Scholarship

Many of our advisors at FIT are PSU alumni so we feel it is only suitable to help other students pursuing financial industry careers achieve their dreams. We offer an annual $5000 scholarship to students majoring in Accounting or Finance, at both the Bachelors and Masters degree level, with a preference to those with a military background.

Backpacks for Homeless Youth

Homelessness is an issue that affects far too many people, many of whom are youth, helpless to improving their situations. We provided 60 backpacks to youth in our community filled with necessities such as personal hygiene products, hats, gloves, snacks, etc.

Habitat for Humanity

Habitat for Humanity builds and restores homes for communities to help homeowners achieve stability and independence for a better life. We think this is an important cause and are grateful to have the opportunity to help build some of these homes.

Oregon Food Bank

The Oregon Food Bank provides meals for people in our community struggling with food insecurity. We believe no one should have to wonder when they will eat next and offer our time and resources to help mitigate this issue. We have volunteered to prepare and package meals for families in addition to donating to the Food Bank.

Ronald McDonald House

The Ronald McDonald House provides a home away from home for families of seriously injured or ill children who had to travel for care. Some of these families have to stay for extended periods and we want to help make their stay a little bit easier. A few times a year the FIT team goes to the Ronald McDonald House to make a home cooked meal for the families. This is a heart-warming experience for our team and we truly cherish the opportunity to help.

We feel it is important to keep our environment clean for future generations. Every quarter the FIT team sets out to clean up the road in front of Southridge Highschool. The work may be dirty, but we still have a blast cleaning together.

Charitable Contributions

We’d love to volunteer our time to many different organizations but unfortunately don’t have the capacity to do so. Our solution is to donate other resources to these causes. These are some of the organizations we’ve donated to:

  • Parkinson’s Research
  • Oregon Public Broadcasting (OPB)
  • Leach Botanical Garden
  • American Cancer Society
  • Oregon Humane Society
  • Portland Animal Welfare Team (PAW)
  • Donate Life Northwest
  • Kidspire
  • Friends of Columbia Gorge
  • And Many More…
